The flag of New Zealand consists of a dark blue field with the Union Jack positioned in the canton, the upper corner nearest the flagpole. On the fly side, four five-pointed red stars with white borders represent the Southern Cross constellation. This arrangement places the principal elements in clearly separated areas: the Union Jack occupies the upper hoist, while the star pattern balances the design toward the outer edge. The dark field and contrasting red, white, and blue elements make the flag readily identifiable in national and international settings.
New Zealand is an independent country in Oceania, within the Australia and New Zealand subregion. Its capital is Wellington, and the country uses the New Zealand dollar as its currency. English, Māori, and New Zealand Sign Language are its listed languages, reflecting the country’s linguistic and cultural framework. New Zealand is an independent United Nations member state. As an island country, it has no neighboring countries sharing land borders, and its geographic setting in the southwestern Pacific distinguishes it within the wider Oceania region.
