Founded after the country’s independence, it brings educators together around professional development, solidarity, welfare, and the protection of their profession. Its name is commonly abbreviated to PGRI.

The PGRI emblem is associated with the organization’s role in education and service to the public. Its design features a circular frame, an upright torch, rays, and books, with red, white, green, and yellow elements. The emblem’s visual themes connect teaching with learning and the development of future generations. PGRI’s founding date, November 25, is also observed in Indonesia as National Teachers’ Day.
