The coat of arms of Yogyakarta Province has a circular design with a black outer field, a red circle surrounded by white, and a gold five-pointed star at the top. It also features a saka guru-shaped monument flanked by wings, with jasmine, a lotus-decorated base, rice and cotton, and a white ribbon bearing “YOGYAKARTA”.

  • Circular field and star: The circle and cylindrical monument represent the philosophy of golong-gilig: unity, resolve, and mutual cooperation. The gold star symbolizes belief in the One Almighty God.
  • Monument and wings: The winged monument symbolizes humanity. Each wing has nine outer feathers and eight inner feathers, representing Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX and Sri Paku Alam VIII, respectively.
  • Jasmine flower: The white jasmine rising toward the star symbolizes education and culture grounded in devotion to God. Its three petals, simple form, and fragrance are associated with humility and morality.
  • Monument base: The lotus-decorated base symbolizes popular sovereignty. Its slanted carving represents a spirit of development, while its green color and lotus ornament represent the fertility of the land and the community’s spirit.
  • Rice and cotton: Positioned on the right and left, respectively, they symbolize social justice. The emblem has 45 rice grains, 17 cotton blossoms, and eight cotton leaves.
  • Feather and crop counts: The counts 17, 8, and 45 refer to Indonesia’s Proclamation of Independence on August 17, 1945. The red-and-white circle symbolizes national unity.

Regional Regulation No. 3 of 1969 established the coat of arms of Yogyakarta Province on March 5, 1969; it was ratified on August 23 and promulgated on October 28, with retroactive effect from December 19, 1968. The regulation records “RASA SUKA NGESTI PRADJA” as a candrasengkala for 1786 and “YOGYAKARTA TRUS MANDIRI” as a suryasengkala for 1945.
