The coat of arms of Gorontalo Province has an outer shield shaped like a heart, a blue-purple ground, and an inner oval or egg-shaped field with a white center. Its other features include a five-pointed star, rice, cotton, a chain, coconut trees, maleo wings, a fort, an open book, and a red ribbon.
- Shield and inner field: The heart-like shield symbolizes loyalty and protection of the people’s lives. The egg-shaped field symbolizes ideas and aspirations expected to develop into community welfare.
- Star, fort, and flag: The star symbolizes high aspirations and religious values, in keeping with the philosophy “Adat bersendikan syara, syara bersendikan Kitabullah”. The fort symbolizes resolve to defend the region, people, customs, religion, and country. The Red and White symbol on the fort refers to the patriotic event of January 23, 1942.
- Rice, cotton, and chain: The 42 grains of rice and 19 cotton bolls symbolize prosperity and welfare; their numbers form 1942. The chain symbolizes unity in diversity, and its 23 links refer to January 23.
- Coconut trees and maleo wings: Two curved coconut trees symbolize dynamic movement toward the future. The pair of outstretched maleo wings, with 16 feathers, symbolizes readiness to develop and compete; the feathers are linked to February 16.
- Book, colors, and ribbon: The open book symbolizes aspirations for achievement in knowledge, technology, faith, and piety. The ribbon is red and bears “PROVINSI GORONTALO” in white; it symbolizes the desire to acquire and retain knowledge and technology. The ribbon carries the province’s administrative name, not a separate motto.
Gorontalo Province Regional Regulation No. 01 of 2001 established the coat of arms and was ratified and promulgated on July 13, 2001. The coat of arms of Gorontalo Province was designed by Roni Katili with assistance from Kusno Monoarfa and selected through a 2001 design competition. The provincial government identifies its use on official correspondence, flags, banners, and government uniforms.
