The coat of arms of West Kalimantan Province has a light-green pentagonal field with a black border. Its center contains a white shield with a crossed mandau and keris; eight flames appear above, a white horizontal line crosses the design, and rice and cotton flank it, with a motto ribbon below.
- Pentagonal form: The five-sided shape symbolizes Pancasila and affirms West Kalimantan’s place in the Republic of Indonesia, which is founded on Pancasila.
- Central shield and weapons: The shield, mandau, and keris represent the heritage and cultures of Dayak and Malay communities in West Kalimantan. The shield symbolizes struggle and protection, while the weapons symbolize the struggle to achieve goals.
- White horizontal line: The line across the center symbolizes the Equator, which crosses West Kalimantan.
- Flames, rice, and cotton: The flames in a furnace symbolize an undying spirit of struggle. The 17 cotton fruits, eight flames, and 45 rice grains form the reference 17-8-45 to Indonesia’s Proclamation of Independence on August 17, 1945, and to West Kalimantan residents’ role in defending independence. Rice and cotton also symbolize adequate food and clothing.
- Ribbon and motto: The four-cornered tie binding the rice and cotton symbolizes Catur Karsa: earnestness, honesty, mutual cooperation, and kinship. The lower white ribbon bears “AKCAYA”, meaning “does not perish” and expressing perseverance and determination.
- Colors: Regional Regulation No. 4 of 1964 specifies six colors: light green, dark green, white, gold, red, and black. The light-green field symbolizes fertility, while white on the shield and weapons signifies purity.
West Kalimantan Level I Regional Regulation No. 4 of 1964 established the coat of arms of West Kalimantan Province on December 8, 1964; it was promulgated in Regional Gazette No. 2 of 1967 on May 23, 1967. The Governor of West Kalimantan Regulation No. 105 of 2021 also includes its use on provincial government civil servants’ uniforms.
