The Banda Aceh City emblem features a main shield with five corners at its top and five architectural peaks formed by mosque domes with Gunongan in the background. Its other documented elements represent Pancasila, religious and cultural values, prosperity, heroism, and education.
- Pancasila features: The five upper corners of the main shield, the five peaks formed by the domes and Gunongan, and the five colors used across the emblem represent the philosophy of Pancasila.
- Mosque domes and Gunongan: The mosque domes symbolize Islamic religious values. Gunongan, a structure dating from the time of Sultan Iskandar Muda, symbolizes Aceh’s cultural heritage.
- Rice and pepper: These produce symbolize prosperity and well-being, and refer to Banda Aceh’s past importance in the Nusantara spice trade.
- Upright unsheathed rencong: This traditional Acehnese weapon symbolizes heroism, courage, patriotism, and the people’s strength in winning and defending independence.
- Tugu Kota Pelajar: The City of Students Monument represents the pursuit of education and knowledge, and recalls the ideals associated with Indonesia’s Proclamation of Independence on August 17, 1945.
- Colors: Yellow represents grandeur, royal glory, and honored heritage; green, Islamic values, peace, and tolerance; red, courage and fighting spirit; black, resolve and loyalty; and white, purity, sincerity, and honesty.
The Banda Aceh City emblem was officially established through the Regional Regulation of Kota Praja Kuta Raja No. 3 of 1962.
