The coat of arms of West Java Province consists of an egg-shaped shield with a ribbon below it. The composition includes rice, a cotton stalk, a kujang, a mountain, a river or water channel, agricultural plots, and a dam, reflecting documented features of West Java’s official regional emblem.
- Shield and ribbon: The shield represents self-protection, while the ribbon below the shield carries the motto “Gemah Ripah Repeh Rapih”.
- Rice and cotton: The rice has 17 grains and symbolizes a staple food. The cotton has eight blossoms and symbolizes the sufficiency of clothing and fertility. The numbers 17 and 8 refer to the date and month of the Proclamation of Indonesian Independence.
- Kujang: The kujang is regarded as a characteristic weapon of the Sundanese people. Its five holes symbolize the five principles of Pancasila.
- Landscape and agriculture: The mountain symbolizes West Java’s predominantly mountainous character. The river represents canals, channels, and the sea, while the plots below the mountain represent rice fields, cultivated fields, and plantations.
- Dam and colors: The dam symbolizes irrigation as an important concern in an agrarian region. Green represents fertility and prosperity, blue tranquility or peace, yellow dignity and wealth, black steadfastness and eternity, and red courage.
The coat of arms of West Java Province was established by Regional Regulation No. 11/PD/DPRD-GR/61 of April 8, 1961, and its use was regulated by Regional Regulation No. 21/PD-DPRD-GR/61 of April 22, 1961. The regulations cover government buildings, certain official vehicles, government stationery and publications, official events, and banners, while prohibiting commercial, political, or degrading use. The motto refers to prosperity and sufficient food and clothing, together with harmony, safety, and peace.
