Premier League is a professional association football league in England and the highest level of the English football league system. Founded as the FA Premier League on 20 February 1992, it was established after clubs from the First Division separated from the English Football League (EFL). The competition is contested by 20 clubs and operates with promotion and relegation between the EFL Championship.

Seasons usually run from August to May, with each club playing 38 matches: two against every other team, once at home and once away. The league is managed as a corporation, with its member clubs acting as shareholders. Six clubs—Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur—have participated in every season since its formation.
