Newcastle United Football Club is a professional association football club based in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. The club competes in the Premier League, the top tier of English football, and the UEFA Champions League (UCL). Founded in 1881 as Stanley F.C., it adopted its present form in 1892 after absorbing the assets of local club Newcastle West End.

The club has been part of the Football League since 1893 and is known for its traditional black-and-white striped shirts, black shorts, and black or white socks. It shares a long-standing rivalry with Sunderland, contested in the Tyne–Wear derby.
