Hamburger SV, officially Hamburger Sport-Verein e.V. and also known as HSV, is a German football club based in Hamburg. The club’s football department currently competes in the Bundesliga, Germany’s top-tier league. The present organisation was formed in June 1919 through the merger of three earlier clubs, while its history traces back to the founding of SC Germania on 29 September 1887.

Hamburger SV is known by the nickname “die Rothosen” (“the Red Shorts”) and has official club colours of blue, white and black. The club has longstanding rivalries with Werder Bremen in the Nordderby and with Hamburg-based FC St. Pauli in the Hamburg derby. It also places strong emphasis on grassroots organisation and youth development.
