Ligue 1 is France’s highest-level professional association football league. It is administered by the Ligue de Football Professionnel and contested by 18 clubs, with promotion and relegation linking it to Ligue 2. The league season generally runs from August to May, with matches mainly scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays and some played on weekday evenings.

Established on 11 September 1932 as National, the competition adopted the name Division 1 after its first season and became known as Ligue 1 in 2002. It forms the top tier of the French football league system and remains one of Europe’s leading national leagues.
