Athletic Club Bilbao is a professional football club based in Bilbao, Spain. It is commonly known as Athletic Bilbao or simply Athletic, and it competes in La Liga and the UEFA Champions League (UCL). The club plays in red and white striped shirts with black shorts and is also known as Lehoiak, meaning “The Lions.”

Athletic is one of the founding members of La Liga and has remained in Spain’s top division since 1929. It is the most successful Basque club in league and cup titles, and its long-standing policy focuses on signing players native to or trained in the greater Basque Country. The club is member-owned, with the president elected by its members.
